What is wonton soup
Wonton soup is a Chinese-style dish made with savory broth, filled wontons, and vegetables. The wontons usually contain ground pork or shrimp. The broth is light, warm, and seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, and sometimes sesame oil.
More about this recipe
This is a light Thai-style soup with wontons, tender bok choy, and a simple broth made from Thai pantry staples.
Since the wontons are the main protein, it’s definitely on the lighter side. It’s perfect when you want something cozy but not too heavy.
I like to make the broth really simple in the pot, but then I customize it in my bowl at the table. Think chili flakes for heat or fried garlic for more flavor. Just like when you eat boat noodles!

If you have frozen or store-bought wontons ready to go, it’s a great lunch or dinner whenever you’re too tired to cook.
It comes together fast and always hits the spot on a cold fall or winter day.

How to make Thai wonton soup
Step 1: Prepare the broth. In a pot, bring water to a boil over medium-high heat. Add your bouillon cube, light soy sauce, and white pepper powder. Stir until everything is fully dissolved. Let it simmer gently to bring out the savory flavor.

Step 2: Add the wontons. Once the broth is simmering, gently drop in the wontons. Make sure they don’t stick to each other or the bottom of the pot. Let them cook for about 4–5 minutes, or until they are cooked through.

Step 3: Add the bok choy. When the wontons are nearly done, toss in the bok choy. Let it cook just until tender but still bright green, about 1–2 minutes.

Step 4: Serve. Ladle the broth, wontons, and bok choy into bowls. Garnish with green onions and optionally with more white pepper or red pepper flakes for extra heat. Enjoy!
